Since 1993, SSA UCMAS has been incorporating innovative & modern teaching approaches with the application of the abacus. SSA UCMAS collaborates with the Chinese Zhusuan Association (CZA) from China and Global Abacus & Mental Arithmetic Association (GAMA) to cater newer and much improved scientifically-proven methodologies in the mental development field.

is a unique scientifically-proven brain development program designed for children and young people to develop their latent mental power at an age when brain development is reaching its peak. At SSA UCMAS, we are dedicated to enhancing children’s lives where we offer a unique opportunity for children aged 4 to 12 to participate in a program that contributed to the mental health, development and excellence of kids around the globe since 1993 in more than 56 countries. SSA UCMAS utilizes the "Abacus Mental Arithmetic” skills as a training tool for the mental development of children. Mental Arithmetic is a form of calculation that is solely done by the human mind without the use of pencil and paper, calculator or any other gadget or electronic device. During the training process, children are transformed into professional users of the abacus, an ancient Chinese calculator, and then a different set of mental trainings allows the child to imagine or visualize a virtual or a “mental” abacus to solve mathematical problems. These mental arithmetic processes will act as an actual training for the child’s mental skills that are occupied during the arithmetic solving process and help improve them.

Our brain

is divided into two hemispheres, left and right. The two hemispheres process information in different ways and work together in our everyday lives. However, about 90% of children use primarily the left brain. The focus of the left brain is verbal, processing information in an analytical and sequential way, looking first at the pieces then putting them together to get the whole. It is also responsible for dealing with the present and past, logic, sequencing, computation, reasoning, linear mathematics, languages, and analytical abilities. The right side of the brain focuses on the visual and processes information in an intuitive and simultaneous way, looking first at the whole picture then the details. It deals with present and future, imagination, visualization, arts, shapes, space, intuition, synthesis, and integration of information and creativity. The human brain has no limit to its potentials as long as it is cultivated at a young age and constantly challenged. In order to explore and develop the potentials of the human brain fully, many physiologists and brain scientists have been studying ways to further develop the function of the right side of the brain focusing on its learning ability, concentration, perceptual capabilities and imagination skills. SSA UCMAS Program offers many building blocks in that dimension.
According to scientific research, 75% of our brain capacity develops between the ages of 4 and 12 making this age range crucial for mental development.

Children and young teenagers in this age group retain significant adaptability in their brains, which allows growth and inter-connection of brain cells. For that reason, many experts recommend introducing children at a young age to a new language or to playing a musical instrument, as these activities stimulate the brain. It is also easier for kids to acquire these skills at that young age, so what kids learn when they are young has a great influence over their future.

Experiments show that most young children rank highly creative, a function of the right brain, before entering school. Due to our educational system placing a higher value on the left brain skills such as mathematics, logic and language than it does on arts or being creative which train the right brain. Only 10% of these children will rank highly creative by the age of 7. As adults, only 2% of them remain highly creative. That is why the mental training through SSA UCMAS Program targets young children to help promote brain growth and development in general and especially in the right brain for life-long results.
The abacus is an ancient tool developed in China some 3000 years ago. Both hands are used to manipulate the Abacus beads, ensuring stimulation of both the left and right sides of the brain. The combination of touch, movement and numerical concept is the initial focus.

Within the first few weeks, students learn how to read the abacus numbers and practice simple calculations on it. Hand in hand with the Abacus learning, students receive trainings to develop their mental and fine motor skills like concentration, listening, observation, fingering and speed writing.

Few weeks later and with training, students’ minds gain the ability to calculate without the need for a real abacus, solely depending on their imagination as they develop the ability to retrieve the correct result of the calculation using a "Mental Abacus" which is an imaginary or a virtual device.

With time students are taught techniques to perform all four mathematical operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) using the abacus in a very fast and accurate way exactly as we use modern calculators. The gradual build up of the arithmetic complexity is the technique we use to keep challenging the young learners' minds. With continuous practice, the students' mental abilities will keep growing.

Improves Concentration

Kids are trained to be involved in different processes happening at the same time. They gradually learn how to be focused and ignore distractions.

Promotes creativity

Having developed the processes of the right brain (imagination & visualization), kids find it easier to be creative and inspired.

Improves Listening & Observation

Through the use of flashcards, kids start the number processing with a mere glance. They are also trained to listen and manipulate a string of numbers which are read only once.

Develops astonishing mental arithmetic abilities

Kids deal with numbers in a smooth and fun way. At the end of the programme, they can even solve arithmetic problems mentally faster than a calculator!

Improves Imagination & Visualisation

Kids are challenged to form a visual abacus early in the training and use this imaginary abacus in solving problems.

Improves Concentration

Kids are trained to be involved in different processes happening at the same time. They gradually learn how to be focused and ignore distractions.

Strengthens memory

Kids memorise different images on the virtual abacus during problem-solving. The continuous use and training of memory significantly improve their photographic memory.

Boosts self-Confidence

As a result of continuous positive feedback along with improved mental abilities, kids will be given an extremely powerful boost to their self-image and confidence.

Enhances accuracy & Speed

In SSA UCMAS, one of the real challenges for kids is time. Kids are trained to give extremely accurate results in shorter time limits.

Course Structure

SSA UCMAS is not a solely math program. It is a mental development program that uses mental arithmetic as a tool. There may be some value for kids doing arithmetic that is fast and accurate but the mental abilities and skills learnt at SSA UCMAS are the ultimate goal and can be applied to almost every aspect of child's life, academic or otherwise.
SSA UCMAS is not a math program. It is a mental development program that uses mental arithmetic as a tool. Mental abilities and skills learnt at SSA UCMAS apply to almost every aspect of your child’s life, academic or otherwise.
Consider the following notable facts:

• SSA UCMAS uses a unique curriculum that has proved to be very successful during the past 18 years and in over 40 countries compared to other programs.

• SSA UCMAS is number one worldwide with international presence; the program is available in more than 40 countries.

• SSA UCMAS is number one worldwide when it comes to student base.

• Kids use Abacus from day one, compared to other programs

Parents start seeing results after the second level, or about six (6) months. However, attentive parents will notice improvement in different mental parameters earlier.
Children start reaping noticeable benefits from the program after the completion of second level; nevertheless, benefits gained upon completion of the program have a profound effect on child’s mental abilities. We recommend that the child completes up to the Intermediate Level.
SSA UCMAS is designed for normal kids. No results are guaranteed for kids with learning disabilities; however, if parents would like to enroll their kids and monitor their improvement, then it is their personal preference. Please communicate the case of your child with SSA UCMAS course instructor to make special arrangements for children with learning disabilities. Children with learning disabilities will be assessed by Course Instructors on a regular basis and the feedback of their performance will be discussed with their parents to assess the value benefits of retaining them in the program.
Through training for each of these skills. Development occurs while challenging the child’s ability gradually but continuously to improve her/his use of the skill.

• Concentration Kids are trained to be involved in different processes happening at same time. They gradually learn how to be focused on the task in hand and ignore different kinds of distraction.

• Observation Through the training on the flash cards and during solving mental math problems, kids take only a glance at the card or problem to start the numbers’ processing. This significantly enhances their observation abilities. The same goes for listening since kids are trained to hear numbers only once during problem solving because numbers are not repeated. With time kids significantly develop improved listening skills through continuous training.

• Imagination & Visualization Kids are challenged to start forming a virtual abacus early in the training and soon will start using this imaginary or virtual abacus in solving problems. This continuous use of imagination and visualization techniques significantly improves the kid’s skill in these two parameters.

• Memory Kids memorize different images during their numbers training and during solving problems; they tend to memorize momentarily each image constructed after doing any arithmetic and before giving the final answer. This continuous use and training of memory significantly improve this ability especially what is known as the photographic memory.

• Speed & Accuracy In SSA UCMAS one of the real challenges is time. Kids are gradually trained to give extremely accurate results in shorter and shorter times. This continuous challenge will teach kids how to optimize the use of time while staying accurate.

• Creativity Having developed imagination and visualization as well as memory, concentration and the other mental parameters and through the whole process of the right brain training and activation, kids will find it easier to be creative and inspired.

• Self Confidence As a result of the continuous positive feedback received from parents, teachers, peers and the community as well as the exposure during the program to different audiences in demonstrations, along with the improved mental abilities- kids will be given an extremely powerful boost to their self -image and confidence that will further help them in their future challenges.

• Academic Achievement Having developed all the above-mentioned parameters, it is normal for kids at SSA UCMAS to have a very strong foundation for academic achievement and excellence.
Because our training method differs greatly from that of traditional mathematics, just because your child struggles with math at school doesn’t mean he won’t do well at SSA UCMAS. On the contrary, some of the most successful students have been those who had previously found math difficult. If a student is dedicated to the program, receives strong parental support and encouragement and persists through the initial training period, dramatic improvement is guaranteed. This is confirmed by the many testimonials we have from our proud SSA UCMAS parents.
SSA UCMAS instructors are trained and certified and take regular refresher courses/grading tests to ensure quality of training. They are committed to ensure that every child is monitored and develop a strong rapport with the students and parents. We have small batches of 10-15 students to ensure attention to every child.
